God’s own country, indeed

When I think about the weather in Kerala, the one word that rushes to my mind is the adjective ‘clement’. To put it even better, the weather is exceptionally clement over here, or in any part of Kerala for that matter. It might be bright and sunny, not sultry and oppressive though, but chances are that there might be rain pelting on the ground sans thunder and lightning. Therefore, it rains when the sun shines here. These idyllic occasions, people say, are  quite auspicious and since last Monday, I’m witnessing these events on a daily basis now. Kerala is  of course God’s own country. Apt sobriquet, no wonder why it  got this name.

Driving me nuts

I’m fed up of my wailing cousin sister. If there’s one thing that’s annoying in the world, well it’s my 20 year old cousin sister. Now when I say cousin sister, I’m alluding to my father’s brother’s daughter and not my mother’s sister’s adorable daughter. The reason why I describe her annoying is merely because of the fact that she bothers me a lot. Every time I run into her, all she has got to say is this - brother, where’s the treat? In reply,  I manage a grin. The treat which she is alluding to is a Nokia N95 mobile phone and she claims that I promised to buy her one, a couple of years back. If my memory serves me correctly, I haven’t promised anyone anything. When I don’t have a  decent phone myself, why should I gift her one? Surprisingly, she gifted two bar chocolates to me last night and when I asked her what’s the occasion, without any hesitation she said it was my birthday gift. My cousin brother who was standing close to me and who knows all the story tauntingly told her - listen, gifting these chocolates is fine but don’t expect a mobile phone in return! Every one excluding her guffawed. Hope she got the message!

Freddie bids adieu in style

By winning the last and final test series comprehensively, England have retained the Ashes. Fantastic news if you are an England supporter and quite disheartening if you are an Aussie fan. The Aussies weren’t at their flamboyant best in their final encounter - when they won the penultimate test match and came back strongly, everyone had a hope that the fifth match would be very exciting. But alas, that was not the case. It was more of a one-sided contest and when the visitors were bowled out for a modest total in the first innings, their hopes of clinching the title shattered. Much was expected of them in the second innings but they faltered again with their batting. Now with the Ashes loss, the Australian skipper would draw more flak. Meanwhile, it’s time to say goodbye for England all-rounder Andrew Flintoff. Much was expected of him too but he delivered only a little. Whether his performance was clinical or not, it’s always a good thing when a player ends his career on a winning note. All rounders of his class are few and far between. Farewell, Freddie!
