With their clash over ban on plastic bags still fresh on everyone’s minds, Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh and Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit locked horns at the recently concluded launch of Delhi’s climate change agenda. Ramesh, much to the chagrin of Dikshit, said that the judiciary should be thanked for the switchover to CNG buses in the capital. The credit should not go to the government of Delhi but the judiciary, exclaimed Ramesh. The Delhi Chief Minister tactfully retorted that it was her government that had created the infrastructure to make the changeover possible!

Exercising authority

The demand for the repatriation of Commonwealth Games Federation CEO Mike Hooper had fizzled out, thanks to a government missive to the Organizing Committee chairman Suresh Kalmadi. Sources say Kalmadi was told in no uncertain terms before he left for the Queen’s baton relay in London that the government wanted status quo to be maintained and to avoid sacking or repatriation that would make headlines for the wrong reasons. Their reasoning - if Hooper was to be moved back to London, it should have been done earlier and not when there was less than a year left for the Games. To ensure smooth working of the Organizing Committee, the government has told Kalmadi to borrow three or four senior officers, handpicked by the PMO for crucial department like finance. Thus, while the committee keeps the appearance of independently running the show, it is really the government that is calling the shots.
