Vinnaithandi Varuvaya - Review

Filed under: Movie — Iceman @ 12:04 pm

Of late, Tamil cinema is going through a rough patch delivering umpteen run of the mill movies and the much hyped and anticipated Vinnaithandi Varuvaya (VTV) too joins the long list. Touted as a completely different romantic flick, VTV revolves around Karthik (Simbu) who having completed his mechanical engineering aspires to be a film maker.  Then there’s this amazingly impressive Jessie (Trisha) hailing from a conservative Malayalee background. Karthik falls in love with Jessie at first sight and moving on you’ll see the usual stuff of yesteryear movies of lad attempting to make amorous advances towards his ladylove. Rather than focusing on his film making journey, the protagonist is seen  courting the heroine  every now and then and more importantly, in smooching her. Whether he pursues his dream of becoming a successful film maker or gets hitched with Jessie forms the crux of the story. Despite the dragging first half, the movie  is pretty okay but with the abrupt turn of events, the second half will leave you confused. From the technical perspective, AR Rahman has done an excellent job with his soul-stirring background score. The cinematography is decent and so is the choreography and song picturization. Other than these, there’s nothing much you can brag about the movie. Overall, VTV is just an OK movie and the claims that say it’s a must watch movie is a mere exaggeration.

What goes around, comes around?

Sri Ram Sena chief Pramod Muthalik recently got a taste of his own medicine. Just over a year after his men assaulted pub hoppers in Mangalore, unidentified youths blackened Muthalik’s face at a debate organized by a TV channel in Bangalore on the eve of Valentine’s day. Muthalik and his men were ranting against Valentine’s day celebrations and even threatened to get boys and girls going out together on V day married. However, Rama Sena workers spared the love birds on Valentine’s day. Instead they targeted Congress offices across Karnataka holding the Youth Congress responsible for the blackening.

It’s summer time, folks

Mercury level has gradually started increasing and it’s that time of the year when the crowd start thronging the beaches in huge numbers despite the sultriness. Venturing out is all right but one has to be aware that direct sunlight is extremely harmful to the human eye and has to make sure he stays protected from sun’s rays. Wearing sun glasses ensures good protection but how to stay fashionable at the same time? Of late, I’ve been checking out a lot of optical shops online looking for stylish yet inexpensive sunglasses but none fitted the bill. However after my friend’s recommendation, there was one optical which I finally settled for. Available at surprisingly affordable prices, the optical store offered myriad stylish and high quality sun glasses and choosing one from the lot was quite a task.

Worth an advice

Age may have mellowed Dr Farooq Abdullah but it has not withered his rhetoric. He breathed fire at a book launch in honour of late Dr Mohammad Sultan Khuroo. Recently, he said that despite the latest machinery and skilled manpower, doctors loot the poor and needy patients. They intentionally leave the machinery at government hospitals defunct to increase the business of private institutions. Doctors even sell sample medicine to chemists. The medicines available are filled with cow dung. He advised the doctors to emulate doctor Ali Khan, who spent from his own pocket to buy medicines for the poor. Being a trained doctor himself, the Union Minister should consider starting a model hospital or resurrecting thee nurse home that British born wife Mollie ran in Srinagar.

When you buy a brand new air conditioner, you’ll be promised a couple of free services by the dealer. Or at the most three free services. But what happens after that? When your air conditioner starts creating problems, you will definitely think of replacing the unit with another one. When there are dedicated services that can repair any problem with your existing system regardless of what make or model it is, why consider buying a new one? Or providing professional repairs to your heating system for that matter. Of course, there are several companies out there offering repair services but if you need it the professional way, there are only a handful - Virginia heating repair is one among them. Apart from providing these services, customer satisfaction is also equally important. So finding a right service is definitely quite a task. Unless you know someone personally.

Move over, priests and godmen. A nag temple in Himachal Pradesh is inundated with visiting cards from devotees. On the cards are the devotees’ wishes, too, mostly profession related or the desire for a male child. Those without visiting cards leave their name, address and their fervent desires behind on a piece of paper. Those whose wishes are granted return to give thanks and remove their visiting card. Perhaps, the others need to include self-addressed envelopes.

Unsolicited mails are always unwelcome. Be it on forums, blog, or anywhere on the web for that matter. Despite technological advancements, Internet users are still finding it tough to tackle spammers and abusers. Now imagine you are a webmaster/forum owner, what steps would you implement to get rid of them? If you’re still clueless, then I would suggest you check out phpBB MOD and do a trial run immediately. With ATLBL anti-spam as the modification name, this spam blacklist identifies spammers/abusers based on their IP and email addresses thus keeping your forum completely protected. What’s interesting about this anti-spam service? Basically, the MOD implements a check of the ATLBL spam blacklist for several board functions as a means of preventing spam. Registration IP, registration email, profile www field, profile email, post IP, contents are the checks implemented and on a positive match, form submission is denied. Sounds quite impressive, doesn’t it? Well, with the implementation of these many checks, this ATLBL AntiSpam MOD for phpBB is definitely worth giving a try!
