Of late, Tamil cinema is going through a rough patch delivering umpteen run of the mill movies and the much hyped and anticipated Vinnaithandi Varuvaya (VTV) too joins the long list. Touted as a completely different romantic flick, VTV revolves around Karthik (Simbu) who having completed his mechanical engineering aspires to be a film maker. Then there’s this amazingly impressive Jessie (Trisha) hailing from a conservative Malayalee background. Karthik falls in love with Jessie at first sight and moving on you’ll see the usual stuff of yesteryear movies of lad attempting to make amorous advances towards his ladylove. Rather than focusing on his film making journey, the protagonist is seen courting the heroine every now and then and more importantly, in smooching her. Whether he pursues his dream of becoming a successful film maker or gets hitched with Jessie forms the crux of the story. Despite the dragging first half, the movie is pretty okay but with the abrupt turn of events, the second half will leave you confused. From the technical perspective, AR Rahman has done an excellent job with his soul-stirring background score. The cinematography is decent and so is the choreography and song picturization. Other than these, there’s nothing much you can brag about the movie. Overall, VTV is just an OK movie and the claims that say it’s a must watch movie is a mere exaggeration.

Wake Up Sid
Wake Up Sid is the last Bollywood flick I watched and the moment it got over, I decided to write a review of it. Starring Ranbir Kapoor, Konkona Sen Sharma, Anupam Kher and a few other, the story revolves around Sidharth (Ranbir Kapoor) and his carefree life. Sidharth or Sid as he’s affectionately called is the son of an affluent businessman. He spends little time in college and as usual, comes unprepared for the exit exams. Unaware of this fact, his father asks him to join his company which Sid hesitates but eventually agrees when he’s promised a car. Sid meanwhile meets Aisha (Konkona Sen) the female protagonist, who’s an aspiring writer. At the onset, they are mere friends but when Sid walks out of the house after an unnecessary tiff with his parents because of his failure in the exams and wishes to live with Aisha, their relationship intensifies. However, Aisha make it clear that there’s nothing more than friendship between them. Understanding Sid’s plight, she somehow arranges a job for him as a photographer at her workplace. And when he gets his first salary check, without any hesitation confronts his father and hands it over to him. Impressed with his son’s transformation, his father asks him to come back home and when Sid is about to leave, Aisha becomes restless. She doesn’t reveal her love now but when Sid reads her latest article, which is nothing but her feelings about him he rushes to meet her in the beach and it’s there they declare love for each other. The film, they say, is a romantic comedy. Romance is fine but where’s the comedy?

Vettaikaran review
Entertaining? Yes. Logical? Hell no. Well that’s how you can describe the movie in a couple of words. Incredible stunts, fiery punch lines, foot tapping numbers, this movie has everything you can ask for in a Vijay movie. High on hype and hoopla, this flick received an overwhelming response from the audience and since its release, it’s running in packed theaters. Without veering any further, let me tell you the gist of the story. Vijay, the protagonist aspires to be an IPS officer but the one thing that deters him from fulfilling his dream is the unsatisfactory results in the board exams. He idolizes an honest super cop of his village and endeavors to emulate each and every aspect of his. He then moves to Chennai to pursue his education and in the process meets the heroine Anushka Shetty and falls in love with her immediately. Talking about the heroine, she’s there just to add glamor and the director seriously doesn’t know how to utilize her in the movie. Sadly enough, the ravishing heroine doesn’t get enough footage in the movie other than the songs. And what next in the movie? The hero wages war with the heinous antagonist and eventually succeeds in it. Whether he becomes a successful police officer or not forms the climax of the story. The good thing about the movie is the fun filled and somewhat amusing first half. What didn’t impress me is the hero’s incredible fighting prowess. Bashing a couple of goons is fine but how can a person knock out 10-15 of them almost single handedly? The stunts look very unrealistic and that’s a big let down. Vettaikaran is an out and out Vijay movie and despite being devoid of logic, I’m sure this will fare decently at the box office. After a series of flops on the trot, Vijay can now afford to smile.

Terminator salvation
I got an opportunity to watch the sci-fi movie Terminator Salvation this evening. The film was all about the Skynets trying to eradicate mankind and how John Corner, the protagonist, tries to destroy it. Compared to the other parts, this one was not so good. If you want to spend 2 hours in someway or he other, yes, you can watch the movie. But otherwise, I don’t think it is worth your money! I would give 4 out of ten for this sci-fi thriller.

Older women, younger men?
Bollywood flick Aa Dekhen Zara starring Neil Mukesh and Bipasha Basu was released a couple of weeks back. And guess what, watching the stars on the screen together people can’t be without batting their eyelids. You might be wondering what the reason is? Well, Bipasha Basu, as a matter of fact, is 3 years older than her male counterpart Neil Mukesh. Now that was news to me! It’s just a matter of 3 years and I really don’t understand why people are making a big fuss about it. It only surprised me when some one pointed out that Bips was older than the hero. (But apparently they don’t look so, do they?) Otherwise, of course not many would have noticed that. And when the actor doesn’t have a problem sharing the screen space with a female counterpart who is slightly older, why should others really bother? And no matter how the film has fared in the box office, the talk of the town is undoubtedly about this age gap. I don’t know that much about Bollywood, but tell you what, just fly down to south and take a look at what is happening in Kollywood and Tollywood. Actors who are nearing their 50s and 60s and who are supposed to play the role of a father are paired with lasses who are just in their early 20s. Now how is that for an age gap? Not just a few years but decades!
Older heroines romancing young male leads is queer but the reversal is accepted without batting an eyelid. How weird?! That is after all in reel life. Now what about men who marry women in real life who are actually younger, age-wise? Do people bat an eyelid or do they dismiss it as something usual? Seriously, I haven’t a clue.

2 Harihar Nagar
Does this name ring a bell? If you are a Malayalee and if you are that movie buff who doesn’t miss any of those movies which are aired on television, this should definitely ring a bell. Mukesh, Siddique, Jagatheesh, and Ashokan are back in action together in the rib-tickling entertainer ‘2 Harihar Nagar’ (2HN). This is actually the sequel to ‘In Harihar Nagar’ (IHN). My goodness gracious, how many times have they aired that movie on television and how many times have I fallen off my chair while guffawing to the hilarious jokes and scenes. Agreed the movie was not that good in the second part but the first part was really funny - couldn’t have asked for more humor. 2HN is slated for a April 1st release and I’m very certain that this will be a stupendous hit. Meanwhile, coming to the cast of 2HN, the only change is that Lakshmi Rai has donned Geetha Vijayan’s role. Expecting the movie to be a good one and I can’t wait to watch it. And regarding the review, I’ll write one probably after watching it.
